How much chat history can AI use?

Reviewed October 17, 2026

A normal Text AI request can use up to the 20 saved messages before it. When that set is full, eligible older pinned messages may also be included. Relevant Personal Memory can contribute within context limits.

Answer

This does not mean every older message or attachment is read in full. Very long messages can contribute labeled excerpts, and missing essential information may need clarification. Other generation types do not receive the full history.

Recent context includes useful message details: written text and tables, checklist items and checks, eligible poll results after you vote, quiz counts and public first-attempt scores, flashcard counts, calendar notes, contact fields, link and Maps details, annotations, reactions and available attachment descriptions. Speaker names help keep participants’ information separate.

AI answers can also use available cached file and webpage text within limits. Search Messages and Unread Summary do not read full file contents or extracted webpage bodies. Use Reply or attach the source when you need precise control over what AI reads.
