Why do notifications show different photos or video previews?

Reviewed October 18, 2026

Notification appearance depends on your operating system, settings and installed app version. Updated native apps can show a person’s photo for People messages, reactions, poll votes and chat join/add events. Attached media previews remain separate.

Answer

Android combines recent messages and chat events from one chat. Newer builds use the group photo for group identity, or a group icon when none exists, with individual sender avatars separate. On supported iOS builds, the sender photo appears with the group name. AI completion alerts keep their existing presentation.

Supported photo/video notifications may include media previews. A play symbol on a video thumbnail is a preview hint, not a playback button, and does not alter the video or chat thumbnail. Older uploads, unavailable previews and browsers without image support fall back without blocking messages.

Android may silently retry a temporary preview failure while the notification is current. A retry does not create another alert. Existing mute, mention and notification-tap rules still apply.

After the backend update is deployed, Hashchats can make up to two extra delivery attempts for eligible web, iOS and Android notifications when the push service explicitly reports a temporary internal error. Only the affected devices are retried. A delivery the service has accepted, or whose acceptance is uncertain, is not retried. Delivery is not guaranteed, and notification permissions, browser support and operating-system settings still apply.
