Can I make a Wi-Fi QR code, and is its password private?

Reviewed October 17, 2026

You can request a Wi-Fi QR for WPA/WPA2-personal or an open network. Include the network name, security and password, for example: “Create a Wi-Fi QR, SSID: StudioGuest, security: WPA2, password: your password.” A supplied password implies WPA2; hidden: true is supported.

Answer

Enterprise, WEP and WPA3-only setup are unsupported. A Wi-Fi QR contains recoverable credentials. Sharing its image or link shares those credentials, and attachment links can be accessed by their holders.

Passwords are omitted from generated captions, accessibility descriptions and QR diagnostics, but the original message still contains whatever you typed. This is not confidential credential storage. Use a guest network when appropriate and share the QR only with intended recipients.
